A compressor is probably the most commonly used processor in audio recordings. At its core, a compressor makes loud parts softer and soft parts louder. Unfortunately, this concept sets a false limitation on the creative possibilities of the compressor. Good compression techniques can not only help control tracks, but improve them: give punch, blend competing sounds in a mix, and dramatically improve your mix with various advanced compression techniques.
