3D character design 101

The power of creating a character, which is then brought to life by 3D animation is constantly demonstrated in our daily lives in all forms of media. From gaming to motion picture: web design to advertising. It’s all around us. There can be no argument that choosing to pursue a career in the computer generated graphics industry certainly has prospects. One of the most fundamental starting points is character design.

Why should is character design so important? Well, without an understanding of the basic of anatomical form and weighted movement, your creation will not convincing be able to run, walk or take a punch. Combine this with the ability to create texture, add light and select colour, and you have the basic toolbox to design your own characters and develop your skills as far as your talent can take you.

The main focus of the 3D character design 101 course are the skills needed to successfully design a Character for Game or Film. We start at the beginning: a base drawing of a character's head. This then is used to develop a full 3D model. As your character could be applied to a game, you will be asked to consider a limited ‘polycount’ budget , including textures. Using Mudbox you will sculpt a digital maquette and add all the texture necessary to create your 3D character model.
