The reasons for choosing HVDC technology, and particularly VSC
HVDC, rather than HVAC in a specific case are complex. Through this
modular HVDC training course, DNV is addressing the need to
increase knowledge and understanding of this subject.
The first part starts with an introduction to HVDC technology,
including an overview of the various types of HVDC technologies and
why VSC HVDC is increasingly being applied in power systems. VSC
HVDC converter technology and its applications are explained,
followed by system and equipment issues based on practical project
examples.
The second part on HVDC power cables starts with the main technical
considerations for selecting HVDC or HVAC cables. This is followed
by an overview of the main design parameters and technical aspects
of HVDC cable systems, highlighting the key differences compared to
their HVAC counterparts, presented through both theoretical
perspectives and practical examples.
