EU Green Claims Directive – still on the table?

Despite recent confusion, the EU Green Claims Directive has not been withdrawn by the European Commission. It remains under intense political debate between the European Parliament, Council, and Commission.

The Directive aims to ban misleading environmental claims and require scientific proof for terms like “climate neutral” or “green”, helping to combat greenwashing across the EU.

Timeline of key milestones

• 28 January 2025: First trilogue – mandates and priorities discussed
• 24 April 2025: Second trilogue – key provisions examined
• 23 June 2025: The EU postponed trilogue negotiations and the European Commission indicated it may withdraw the proposed Directive aimed at enforcing scientific substantiation and third-party verification of green claims – due to concerns about overburdening micro-enterprises
• 27 March 2026: Deadline for Member States to implement the Empowering Consumer Directive (EU) 2024/825
